Scope of the Project
The London Independent scope of works required the removal of two existing scanners and the execution of significant structural works, remodelling the internal space to accommodate the new scanning suite. This included lowering the floor in the original MRI room to make space for the new larger, heavier equipment. The completed suite included a new MRI scanner, CT scanner, a new control room and ICT.
Challenges
The logistical constraints of the scanning and construction area brought significant challenges to the project. The control room, requiring refurbishment, remained in use by the Hospital accommodating the Radiographers whilst the second MRI scanner remained in use. Access and egress to site was via a single corridor, which remained in use for staff and patients throughout use. The corridor further served as a waiting area for patients in bed(s) awaiting their MRI.
Our Approach
Apollo constructed a temporary hoarding along the shared corridor, to separate patients from the construction area and preserve their respect and dignity. Strict dust control measures were in place to ensure that the corridor remained clinically clean at all times. All noisy and potentially disruptive works were completed out-of-hours, at times agreed with the Hospital.
Innovation
The limitations of space at the London Independent Hospital required the inclusion of some innovative space saving measures. This included designing and installing fire-rated vertical opening, electrical shutters to the new tech room, to move the space required for traditional door openings.
