Barts Hospital Linac

Working at Barts Hospital, Apollo installed four new Linac machines, Jupiter, Mars, Saturn and Venus in their cancer treatment centre.   Works were completed in phases to allow three of the four Linacs to remain in-use whilst one was being refurbished.

Scope of the Project

The scope of works included the removal of the existing equipment within each of the Linac rooms.  A complete refurbishment of each area was then undertaken including new ceilings, floors and decorating.  Alterations to the room were also carried out to accommodate the new kit, including the new services managed via an Heatherose Control Panel.

Challenges

Services co-ordination, to meet the specification of the new kit whilst integrating services into the hospitals existing system proved a challenge on this project.  Equipment and services were required to be installed with zero tolerance, including the monitor arm and camera, without detailed designs from the manufacturer.  Apollo worked collaboratively with the Varion Electrical Consultant, to ensure all specifications were met working within the constraints of the hospital infrastructure

Innovation

All structural changes to the room were required to be completed without attaching fixings to the existing building, as doing so would compromise the radiation protection within the bunker.  Apollo installed a steel frame within the existing bunker to support the new fixings, within the partition lines allowing for them to be covered.
