King Edward VII Macintosh Building

Apollo were instrumental in the success of the of the CT Scanner, MRI Scanner and X-ray equipment in the new Macintosh Building for the King Edward VII Hospital.  The new imaging suite was located within a refurbished building, across two of lower ground floors.

the challenge

The installation involved three pieces of kit, an X-ray, CT and MRI scanner, with the MRI scanner weighing in at 8tonne.  The new scanning suite was located across two floors, the basement and lower basement.   The only access to these floors was through the exiting reception and down a set of stairs or a lift, neither of which were of suitable size to allow the new kit to be delivered.

The road on which the new building was located was a busy London thoroughfare, occupied by both residents and businesses.

the solution - closing the road

Apollo worked collaboratively with the local authority to facilitate weekend road closures over two consecutive weekends.  The site team were on hand all weekend to manage the road closures, ensuring regular communication with the neighbours and ensuring the safety of all those involved.  The Apollo team were in regular liaison with all residents and businesses leading up to the road closure, facilitating letter drops, newsletters and coffee mornings

the solution - moving the kit

The scanning suite was located in a logistically challenging location.  In order to safety deliver the equipment, Apollo designed and constructed a lifting platform at pavement level, capable of taking the weight of the scanner(s) and lowering them into place on their respective basement levels.  The existing reception was removed to facilitate the installation of the lifting platform.   Each piece of kit was then moved, by hand, through the corridors, requiring specialist staff to be on-hand to remove and replace walls to facilitate the movement of the equipment.

completing the installation

All three pieces of equipment were safely moved into place, and all remedial work including the connection of the devices to the new electrical and mechanical services completed.

The purchase built lifting platform was also removed from the building and the reception re-installed.
